The Huron County Health Unit wants everyone to enjoy the sun…but do so safely. Children and anyone working outdoors are at the greatest risk for UV exposure. Even on cloudy days, people can be exposed to high levels of UV.
The Health Unit urges everyone to cover up, wear sunscreen, have and wear sunglasses, and seek shade.
It’s also recommended avoiding direct sunlight when possible between the hours of 11 AM and 3 PM, and when the UV index is 3 or higher.
Sun safety tips including:
1) Wear lightweight clothing that covers as much skin as possible
2) Choose a wide-brimmed hat to protect your head, ears, and neck
3) Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or more, labelled ‘broad spectrum’ and ‘water-resistant’ and reapply every two hours.
4) Sunscreen expires so check dates
5) Apply sunscreen on babies over 6 months old but avoid the mouth and eye areas.
6) Wear UV 400 or 100% UV protection sunglasses, and especially make sure children’s eyes are protected
7) Wear sunglasses in highly reflective areas like sand, concrete or water.
8) Seek shade whenever possible
9 ) Keep babies younger than one our of direct sunlight.
