CN Rail Safety Week runs from September 23 to the 29 in Canada. We spoke with inspector Scott McCallum from the CN Police, and he gives us more information.
He says his top three safety tips to remember are to never trespass on CN property, which includes taking shortcuts across the tracks, that any time is train time – meaning a train could come on any track from any direction at all hours of the day and night – and that trains may seem to be travelling slower than they are and appear further away than they are, which is why drivers should never try to get around an active crossing.
McCallum says there are loads of websites where you can go for more safety tips and to learn more about Rail Safety Week.
CN says that on average, there are 2,311 crossing accidents and 1,011 trespassing accidents where pedestrians are hit in North America each year.
