Now that cannabis edibles are legal in Canada, the OPP are letting us know what we can expect once they hit shelves in the next few months. While the OPP aren’t sure what exactly the products will be, they do know that there will be strict rules around THC content, production, packaging and labelling.
One of the most important guidelines issued by Health Canada is that edible cannabis products should not appeal to young people. While colourful cannabis-infused gummies in the shape of animals are popular on the black market, the OPP say not to expect to see them on the shelves of legal cannabis retailers. They add that all packaging on cannabis edibles should be plain and child resistant.
The also report that the THC limit for edible cannabis products will be 10 milligrams per package and will not be able to be combined with nicotine or alcohol. The OPP says that the legalization of the edibles may be a positive thing as since the legalization of cannabis, data shows the output in Canada’s cannabis black market declined by 21 per cent since cannabis was legalized.
The earliest date the new products could be available for purchase is expected to be mid-December.
