For the third time in American history a President has been impeached.
The House of Representatives impeached Donald Trump on Obstruction of Congress and Abuse of Power Wednesday (18) in a historic vote which more or less maintained the partisan line.
But contrary to what some may think, that doesn’t mean Trump is way out of the Oval Office.
Political Science professor at Fanshawe College Matt Farrell explains what happens next.
It’s unlikely Trump will be removed from office as the Senate is controlled by the Republicans who have said they’ll back the president during the trial.
Farrell says it’s important to understand the democrats point of view on pursuing the articles of impeachment, despite knowing it wouldn’t lead to Trump leaving office. It provides political ammunition for the campaign trail while also letting the Dems say they did impeach Trump.
Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton are the only two other Presidents to be impeached. Richard Nixon stepped down from office prior to the House vote.
