February 2nd is World Wetlands Day, a global initiative to raise awareness about how important wetlands are to ecosystems and how citizens can do their part to preserve them.
Here locally, the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority will be recognizing world wetlands day with the theme: wetlands and biodiversity; Life thrives in wetlands.
Tim Cummings, Communications specialist at ABCA says that wetlands play vital roles in the local ecosystem and economy.
In a press release, ABCA states that in the past decade, 77 new wetlands amounting to 247 acres of wetlands have been created locally by devoted land owners, but more is needed.
Through the ABCA, landowners can receive access to grants and technical advice on how to create wetlands on their properties.
