The province is transitioning its blue box program so producers will soon assume 100% of the costs, moving away from municipalities typically fitting half the bill.
The transition occurs over the next six years but costs wouldn’t be fully transferred until at least 2023, where one-third of the province transitions costs in each of the following three years.
The Bluewater Recycling Association is of course watching closely with how this progresses and how they’re impact. BRA President Francis Veilleux says it should be well-thought out before anything moves ahead.
For example if producers opt to collect the blue boxes on their own, then there’s double the amount of trucks on the road doing collections rather than just the one who collects both garbage and recycling, something most municipalities do now. Veilleux said that wouldn’t make much sense.
He can’t say whether this change will be good or bad for the BRA until the producers announce their plan of action at a later date, noting it could either help or hinder their operations.
