A municipality receiving a Blue Flag designation means they’ve met environmental compliance from maintaining the area and ensuring proper water quality, among other things.
For 10 years, the Municipality of Bluewater has had that designation for the Bayfield beach, but that likely won’t be the case this year.
Council has opted not to pursue the designation, as mayor Paul Klopp explains why.
Klopp says there’s not a significant cost to get certified but there’s no point at this time to spend the money and garner in-kind gestures for a beach without sand and that the public are currently not allowed on.
He noted the marina, which is open to the public, maintains the designation this year.
