Bear sightings in Huron County are said to have increased over the past few years.
Hannah Cann, the Coastal Stewardship Coordinator with the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation, said that although many black bears have been spotted, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the black bear population has increased.
Cann said that as the bears continue to lose their habitat to development, they have to travel further south in order to find more habitat.
“Most bears are not predatory. Black bears are extremely smart, but curious animals, so if they do approach you, it’s probably because there’s something intriguing or fun , not because they’re trying to find you as a food source,”
Cann added that it’s a good idea to give bears space, and to not get too close to them in an event where a bear is spotted.
