A beach visit on a hot, summer day can provide enough pleasant memories to get you through a long, cold winter.
One memory you can do without is dealing with swimmer’s itch, a common allergic reaction to parasites released from infected snails.
In order to avoid a week or more of annoying itching avoid swimming or wading in shallow, warm water or marshy areas where snails are commonly found.
Towel dry or shower immediately after leaving the water. Rubbing your skin vigorously with a dry, clean towel will kill most of the parasites.
While the majority of cases of swimmer’s itch do not require medical attention, if symptoms persist the health unit recommends you see a healthcare provider.
