Huron County Council has approved of a regional county-led Homelessness Task Force.
The County does have their Social and Property Services Department which helps in taking care of the needs of the community and provides services to support the homeless.
However, Warden Jim Ginn says they are experiencing a growth in the County’s homelessness population and are having a hard time determining the cause.
Ginn says it is hard to get a number of homelessness, there are 28 spots in the hotel in Goderich.
The last he heard 22 are staying but he knows there is a need for more than 28 spots and is aware of there being a significant homelessness issue in Exeter.
Ginn says their goal is to encompass the whole County in the Task Force.
The issue is often invisible in municipalities but with COVID-19 safety measures providing challenges for couch surfers and public spaces being closed, the issue is becoming more apparent.
Ginn says the big issue is always funding.
The County understands that homeless individuals often fall through the cracks in between programs and are doing their best to help them stay healthy.
You can learn more about the resources and programs available through the Huron County’s Social and Property Services Department website.
