Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is reporting an increase in telephone calls where fraudsters claim that your Social Insurance Number (SIN) has been blocked, compromised or suspended. The CARC say that fraudsters are pretending to be calling from government agencies such as Service Canada, the RCMP, or various court houses and are displaying the phone number of these agencies on your caller ID.
Consumers who receive this call are then asked to provide their SIN and other personal information. They have also seen insitances where fraudsters trick Canadians into withdrawing or depositing their money into a safe account where it cannot be frozen or seized during an investigation.
The CAFC reminds you to not provide any personal information over the phone to an unknown caller as they say that no government agency will call you if your SIN number is blocked. For tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of scams, you can visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website.
