Homelessness is an issue across the world, but it isn’t just a big city problem.
In recent months, St. Mary’s has seen an increase in homelessness, along with people dealing with mental health and addiction challenges.
But instead of running from the problem, the local town is providing a wrap-around approach to assisting people in need.
A plan endorsed last week by the town’s council identities access to health care, affordable housing, and food security as priorities for the town.
To do this St. Mary’s is doing things like food services, improving resources to mental health and addiction, creating financial subsidies for recreational programs, all while streamlining services run by the town and other agencies.
The town will be offering drive-through community meals, and a care delivery program for the town’s most vulnerable this holiday season.
