The Four County Labour Market Planning Board says the region between Stratford and the Bruce Peninsula is seeing the low unemployment since the start of the pandemic.
According to their May report, the unemployment rate dropped 2 percentage points to 4.1 percent.
They say this is the largest drop since the advent of the pandemic.
They also say it represents the first time the unemployment rate has fallen below 5 percent for the same time period.
The provincial unemployment rate rose to 8.9 percent with both rate adjusted for inflation.
They say the employment change shows a steady and continued recovery of the local labour market with the third provincial lockdown still being effective.
Net employment increased by 2,900 jobs with gains in the full-time sector (5,900) coupled with losses in part-time work (3,000).
Much of the gains were in the goods-producing sector (1,900) with agriculture (800) and manufacturing (900) making up much of the job gains.
The service-producing sector also saw an increase in jobs (900) with business, building, and supports (1,200) and professional, scientific and technical services (900) seeing most of the gains.
They were offset by job losses in wholesale and retail trade (-400), finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing (-400), and other services (-600).
