Huron Perth Public Health has begun West Nile Virus surveillance.
West Nile is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito, and evidence shows that symptoms could be mild to none, but people with weaker immune systems or chronic illnesses are at the greatest risk.
Over the past 5 years, there have been fewer than five cases of human infection of West Nile reported.
To better understand the risks of West Nile, HPPH are setting up mosquito taps in July and August in Stratford, Listowel, Mitchell and St. Marys.
Ways to protect yourself from Mosquito Bites:
· Use insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin on clothing and exposed skin. Always read and follow label directions.
· Cover up with light-coloured clothes and wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors. Especially in areas where mosquito activity is high.
· Avoid spending time outdoors from dusk until dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
