Last week the federal government voted on banning the practice of conversion therapy.
The votes were 263 yeas and 63 nays to ban the practice in Canada, with the nays including Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb and Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MP Lianne Rood.
Spencer Dempsey is an administrator of the Facebook group LGBTQ+ Allies of Huron County and he spoke with myFM about his reaction to hearing his local federal representative voted nay on the motion.
He says the nay votes have many in the LGBTQ community concerned.
myFM reached out to MP Ben Lobb who told us he is against conversion therapy but he and other members voted nay based on wording of the bill.
Dempsey told myFM that he’s heard that argument as well, but adds he believes it’s a cop out as Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole voted in favor of the motion.
Conversion therapy is used to convince a person to change their sexual orientation.
