Laurie Hazzard from Bayfield has been accepted by the New Democratic Party as a candidate for nomination in Huron-Bruce for the next provincial election.
Prior to getting into politics, Hazzard had an extensive nursing and education career, but the COVID-19 pandemic pushed her to run for office. She said that seeing how the government was handling the pandemic, especially with the number of deaths in the second wave in long term care homes, she was appalled at how poorly things were dealt with.
She added that the environment is another passion of hers, which the NDP platform allows her to address these issues. She added that though the pandemic had pushed back environmental concerns, the current forest fires and heat waves being experienced all over the world have brought it back to the forefront. Hazzard thinks that it is only a matter of time before we have the same forest fire problems as BC, and we are going to have to rethink how we farm.
She adds “Not because of the forest fires, but just because of the unbelievably hot temperatures, so we have to be aware, we have to find ways for our farmers to survive and we have to find a way to cool the planet down, essentially.”
Hazzard feels that she has something to offer, with her experience in health care and education, as well as her passion for wanting to make a difference. The Huron-Bruce NDP provincial nomination meeting will take place in September.
