As we roll into the final long weekend of the summer, OPP are reminding people to enjoy it in a safe fashion. Traditionally one of the busiest of the year, police are counting on motorists and boaters to do their part to reduce the risk of injuries or deaths on the province’s roads, trails and waterways this Labour Day Weekend.
As of the end of August, 176 people have died in 166 fatal collisions on OPP-patrolled roads. Many of the collisions were preventable and can be attributed to poor driving.
A total of 47 fatalities involved excessive speed and 33 were attributed to an inattentive driver. Lack of driver and passenger seatbelt use contributed to 29 deaths, while alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in 22 of this year’s road fatalities.
OPP officers will be working around the clock this weekend, enforcing traffic laws aimed at keeping the motoring public safe.
