Melissa Veldman is the 90.5 myFM, Kubota Women Farmer of the Year. Veldman grew up in the agriculture and farming industry on her family farm.
She says she’s flattered to even be nominated for the award.
Now, her and her husband have a dairy farm, and though she doesn’t always find herself doing the dirty work of farming, everything that happens on the farm the couple decide together.
She also plays a big role behind the scenes handling the business side, paying the employees, and everything that goes into the administrative areas. One thing she says that her and her husband to to try and encourage girls to get into the industry, is hire them.
As for what she’s proud of in her career, Veldman says that seeing what her and her husband have done with their farm, as well as being able to serve not only their neighbours but also Canadians is definitely rewarding.
Veldman says her advice to those wanting to get into the industry is to never expect that the days will be the same.
