Police are warning about the licence plate scam after two local people were contacted.
Last week two people got text messages claiming to be from the Ministry of Transportation and Service Ontario claiming they had refunds.
Scammers will get people to click on a link that brings you to a site where you are asked to provide PIN numbers and passwords.
Legitimate businesses will not request payment through e-transfer, by using online currency like Bitcoin, or with prepaid cards.
If you do become a victim, report the crime to your bank, police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, freeze all credit cards and banking cards, change passwords and PIN numbers, and monitor finances.
If you are the recipient of a fraudulent call, text or email, or if you’ve been a victim of a fraud, you are encouraged to report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by calling 1-888-495-8501 or visit http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
