Two local students just won the National Virtual Money Fair Video Contest.
Grade 7 students Ave and Laila from Listowel took home the grand prizes of $2000 and $1000 respectfully.
myFM caught up with the Students from Blessed Carlo, and they told us they were both so excited.
Students submitted a 3 minute video on the topic of their choice and shared the key things they learned about money and how they will apply what they learned to a healthy financial future.
Ave who finished first did a video submission about the cost of buying a dog.
Laila meanwhile did a video about the costs of operating a baking business.
Their teacher Crystal Brennan tells myFM “the project helped teach about financial literacy which is important because understanding money and how to manage personal finances is integral to building a well-rounded student who understands the math involved in earning, budgeting and saving funds. Like any other skill, the sooner they begin to practice it, the better they will be at mastering it. Hopefully, early education in ‘money matters’ will help students to avoid pitfalls like debt and bankruptcy by empowering them to save and invest early. This contest was a great way to inspire students to learn about financial literacy while achieving expectations in the Ontario Math, Language, and Media Arts curriculums. ”
