Lambton Public Health is reporting the first laboratory-confirmed case of monkeypox.
Officials with LPH say the person infected lives in Lambton County but they likely acquired it outside of the county.
The person is self-isolating at home, and officials believe that widespread transmission is not a problem currently.
Monkeypox is a viral disease spread through broken skin, the respiratory tract, or mucous membranes.
The spread of monkeypox from person to person can occur through close contact with an infected individual’s bodily fluids or skin lesions.
It can also be transmitted when a person comes into contact with contaminated clothing or bedding.
LPH says the spread of monkeypox is NOT exclusive to any group or setting, but individuals with multiple sexual partners may be at increased risk of being exposed.
