What better way to end the summer than watching turtle hatchings released!
September 1st at the Morrison Dam Conservation Area from 1pm to 5pm, it’s the 5th annual release.
This event was started in 2016 and became very popular. It’s taken a two-year hiatus but is back!
The event had a record-breaking 1500 people attend in 2019. You can use the hashtag #LocalTurtleWeek to share videos and photos on social media.
People can protect turtles by helping them across the road the way they are headed, driving more slowly, protecting nests from predators, enhancing turtle habitat through local tree planting and wetland restoration programs, and supporting community turtle monitoring programs.
Turtles help control aquatic vegetation and clean creeks and wetlands by eating the algae and decaying fish among other organisms.
The Turtle Release Event is a way for people to learn about protecting Ontario’s freshwater turtles. To learn more visit the Huron Stewardship Council website: https://www.huronstewardship.ca/ and the Ausable Bayfield Conservation turtles page: https://www.abca.ca/community/turtles/.
