If you’re cold, they’re cold. That’s the typical message to pet parents when the temperatures start to drop.
With the forecast showing extremely cold temperatures on the way, the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is reminding pet parents to take extra precautions to keep animals safe.
myFM spoke with spokesperson Bonnie Bishop with the OSPCA, who told us they are encouraging limited time outside.
If you’re heading out to do some shopping, it’s best to leave your furry friends at home.
During the colder months, cats seeking warmth will often climb under cars. Before heading out, you’re encouraged to knock on the hood or sound the horn before starting the engine.
Pets owners should also watch out for wintertime chemicals. This includes antifreeze, which has a sweet taste that can be attractive to animals but fatal if ingested. Salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice can irritate and even burn their paws.
Bishop told us what to do if you see an animal outside suffering in the cold.
