Middlesex OPP received a call about three coyotes near the Coldstream library.
If you see a coyote, keep your distance and appreciate it from afar. The animal will most likely avoid you.
If by the off chance one does approached you, Never approach it, don’t turn your back and run, make sure to stand tall, make lots of noise and back away from it slowly.
If the animal does become aggressive, call 911.
Tips to prevent and manage conflicts with coyotes in our communities:
1. Don’t put food out to attract wildlife (this makes the animals less fearful of humans over time)
2. Keep your pets inside at night
3. Clean up after your dog – coyotes are attracted to dog feces
4. Install a fence on your property, ensuring it extends at least 20 centimeters underground
5. Garbage should be stored in sealed containers or put out the morning of collection
