Maitland Valley Grotto is the latest Huron County business to be certified as a living wage employer.
The living wage in Perth-Huron is $20.70 per hour based on a 35-hour work week.
The living wage is the product of local data that takes into account the cost of food, housing, utilities, clothing, childcare, and transportation. The formula is applied to three situations; a family of four, a single parent supporting a young child, and a single adult. Government transfers and deductions are also factored in.
“We are extremely proud to be certified as a living wage employer,” said Peter May, owner of Maitland Valley Grotto. “Despite opening our doors in February 2020 right before the pandemic, this incredible community has supported us through and through. We’re happy to support them back by paying fair living wages to our employees.”
United Way Perth-Huron salutes Maitland Valley Grotto for taking the steps to become a living wage employer. “Paying a living wage allows workers the opportunity to fully take part in the life of the place they live,” says United Way Perth-Huron’s executive director Ryan Erb.
