Huron OPP has done a 5-year collision analysis and is putting a strategy in place to reduce the number of collisions.
There has been a steady increase in collisions since 2017. There has been a 25% increase in property damage collisions, a 27% increase in personal injury collisions, and 46 fatal collisions in Huron County.
34% of collisions in Huron County were animal related.
The data showed that 52% of the overall collisions reported to Police involved driver errors that are directly linked to offenses found in the Highway Traffic Act and Criminal Code
The Huron OPP collision reduction strategy for 2023 will include a planned increase in enforcement in the areas where a higher number of collisions have occurred.
A look at the causal factor of these collisions:
· 34% are Animal Related
· 27% involve Driver Error (Fail to Yield, Improper Turn, Improper Passing, Following too Close, etc.)
· 12% involve Inattentive Drivers
· 9% are attributed to Excessive Speed
This detailed analysis has also identified certain areas of Huron County that have seen an increase in collisions over the past five years (2017 – 2022).
Throughout the 2023 initiative, statistics will be collected, and updates will be provided, with the idea that collisions can and will be reduced with the help of the motoring public.
Members of the Huron OPP are committed to public safety, delivering proactive and innovative policing in partnership with our communities. Officers value your contribution to building safe communities.
