Municipality of Bluewater Council rejected a motion on Monday to declare June as pride month, and to fly the pride flag.
Counsellor Bailey supported the motion in discussion, saying that it’s important that the Municipality show it’s support,
However, Counsellor Whetstone raised concerns about the doors that this could open for other groups to request the flying of different flags,
Other dissenting opinions were voiced, including one from Counsellor Lamport,
Existing Bluewater flag policy requires that groups directly request the flying of non-governmental flags.
Counsellor Bailey enquired as to whether other flags had ever been flown for other groups, however, according to the clerk, over the last few years all requests from groups to fly non-governmental flags have been rejected for similar reasons.
