Planner for the Municipality of Bluewater Dave Kester rang the alarm bell regarding the Stanley Landfill at a council meeting on Monday (June 1).
A report presented in 2022 indicated that weekly collection had doubled in the previous two years, and that the landfill was approaching the end of it’s service.
As a result, council implemented limits on collection of bulk items, increased landfill fees, and transitioned curbside collection to a third party facility.
Currently, the planning department is seeking approval from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) for a temporary waste disposal option in the form of a waste transfer station until a permanent solution is implemented.
Kester says that the proposed plan would hopefully bridge the gap in service, and ensure that the community’s waste disposal needs would continue to be met,
Council awarded design and consulting services to GM Blue Plan Engineering, up to an amount of $50,000 – the total budget allocated for the project is $500,000.
