Celebrate Ontario Wine Week by indulging in the flourishing winery scene that has emerged throughout the region over the past few decades.
With an increasing number of wineries dotting the landscape, Huron Shores stands out as an “emerging wine region,” boasting seven establishments that serve VQA certified wines.
Magdalena Kaiser – Director of Public Relations at the Wine Marketing Association of Ontario says that VQA certification is much like similar standards implemented in American and French wine regions,
There are over 190 wineries across Ontairo that are recognized by Wine Country Ontario, with the primary regions being Prince Edward County, Niagara Escarpment, Niagara-on-the-Lake, and Lake Erie North Shore.
Kaiser says that the establishment of wineries in the region is rooted in an agricultural foundation and connection to food,
The region surrounding the Great Lakes is also uniquely suited to growing grapes because of the moderating effects of larger bodies of water on temperatures – with grapes struggling to thrive in extremely hot or cold temperatures.
Kaiser says that one thing that many in the region may not recognize, is how luck we are to have access to so many great establishments,
All that to say, it’s important that we shop local, eat local, drink local – supporting our local wine producers.
