The shooting of an axe-wielding man from Exeter is now the subject of a coroner’s inquest.
On Friday (June 30), supervising coroner for the region, Dr. Elizabeth Urbantke, announced an investigation into the death of Wade Vander Wal.
The 44-year-old with a history of mental health issues was shot outside of his home in December of 2019, after police received reports from a neighbour of erratic behaviour.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers forced entry into the home, suspecting that there was a fire inside. Vander Wal approached the officers wielding an axe, and was subsequently shot and later died from his injuries.
The inquest follows an independent investigation by Ontario’s police watchdog, which previously cleared the officers.
