The Huron Park Community Gardens have transformed a section of abandoned college grounds into a hidden oasis.
The property was generously donated by one of the owners, and The Centralia and Huron Park Lions have taken up the responsibility of hosting the gardens, with Membership Coordinator Lee Taylor leading the charge.
Over time, the gardens have received significant financial support, enabling the implementation of essential enhancements such as improved soil quality and the introduction of raised beds. The funding has primarily come from the Sunset Community Foundation, in addition to a collaboration between the Lions and a local church.
Within the garden, Taylor says that vegetables take center stage,
One common misconception about gardening is that it requires extensive time and effort. However, Taylor reassures potential participants that they have taken steps to simplify the process.
The raised beds have significantly reduced the need for time-consuming weeding, while ample mulch is available to promote healthy soil and minimize maintenance. Additionally, a reliable water supply ensures that tending to the gardens only requires around 30 minutes per week – a small commitment for the bountiful rewards that await.
Looking ahead, Taylor envisions establishing more beds tailored to educating young people about how to grow their own food, while also considering the installation of a greenhouse to facilitate year-round cultivation.
Furthermore, to protect crops from threats such as rabbits, the addition of row covers is being considered.
For those interested in tapping into this wonderful resource, sign-ups are accepted from February to June, allowing individuals and families to secure their spot in the community gardens.
