The alarming statistic is one that MADD Huron Bruce President Brenda Orr says should be ringing alarm bells for residents about the changing landscape of impaired driving.
According to Orr, since the legalization of cannabis, there has been a tendency to downplay the consequences of driving under its influence.
Over the past year alone, there have been 102 impaired driving incidents in Huron County, adding to the staggering nationwide statistic of 87,000 charges annually.
The severity of the impairment among offenders is alarming, with 49% of impaired drivers in Huron County registering blood alcohol levels double the legal limit. This statistic indicates that these individuals were not merely slightly impaired but severely compromised in their ability to safely operate a vehicle.
