An example of one of HC Pride's Decals displayed in a business windown
Monday’s (August 14th) council meeting in the Municipality of Bluewater delved into discussions surrounding proposed participation Huron County Pride Decal Program.
Councillor Bailey submitted the Notice of Motion, highlighting the significance of the decal program in demonstrating support for both residents and visitors.
During the meeting, contrasting viewpoints were expressed by various councillors. Councillor Lamport emphasized that the decision not to fly the pride flag in June should not be construed as a lack of support by council. Lamport pointed out the need for equal treatment of all individuals,
Councillor Lamport also mentioned that he had been on the receiving end of some fairly assertive emails from members of the public following council’s decision not to fly the pride flag in June.
Councillor Bailey countered by explaining that the evolving purpose of Pride transcends orientation. Bailey stressed the importance of visibility in battling shame and stigma, highlighting how the decal program can symbolize the Municipality as a safe space for all communities.
The absence of visible support, like rainbow crosswalks, was also mentioned, underscoring the need to dispel misconceptions about rural inclusivity.
Councillor Whetstone shared a perspective that Pride should extend beyond its current associations. Whetstone suggested adopting a more universal approach, embracing the motto “everyone welcome here, educate don’t discriminate.”
The council meeting concluded with an overall consensus that the decal program, or another symbol in it’s place holds the potential to symbolize a commitment to human rights and equality.
