The South Huron community came together to bring some new life to Morrison Dam – in just one week, residents raised an impressive $10,500 for a new floating kayak launch.
Spearheaded by Exeter resident Susan Riddell, the kayak launch allows visitors to enter and exit the water in their craft without assistance.
The successful project was celebrated with a Ladies Sunset Kayak Night event on August 22.
Drawing 107 kayakers from across southern Ontario, the event not only marked the launch’s accomplishment but also raised $1,600 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Huron through a kayak raffle – the kayak was generously donated by Canadian Tire.
The ABCA had previously expressed interest in installing a kayak launch, but lacked the funding to do so – Stewardship and Lands Manager Nathan Schoelier credited the generosity of the community with bringing that dream to life.
“This is an amazing example of community leadership and effort,” he said. “This simply would not have been possible without the hard work of the organizers and without the support of the community.” The kayak launch offers a way for people to experience nature and gain a new appreciation for nature in their own backyard, he said.
