Family and friends showed up to support the family
The Second Annual Lissencephaly Awareness Day saw the community rally behind a local family at Exeter Town Hall on Friday (September 8th).
There was something fun for everyone including a bouncy castle, raffle, bake sale, pizza, snow cones and more.
Ashley Miller’s daughter Mackenzie has lissencephaly, she said that the support from the community was extremely validating,

This local family saw the outpouring of support from the community.
Lissencephaly is also known as smooth brain, and leads to a variety of challenges ranging from seizures to limited mobility and communication.
The community aspect was absolutely vital to Miller, stating that it’s important to increase visibility and awareness of the disease to help families affected,
The disease only affects one in every 100,000 births, and finding support is something that Miller struggled with when her daughter was initially diagnosed. If there had been an event like this one to attend, Miller says it would have helped her,

A community bake sale was just one of many things to enjoy on Friday
Funds raised by the event will help purchase an adaptive therapy trike for Mackenzie to help with physical fitness and joint mobility. Miller is hopeful that this will also increase opportunities for Mackenzie to connect with other kids in the community.
