Rob and Brenda Steckle, the proud owners of Wirhaven Farm, are local dairy farmers who epitomize the heart and soul of Huron County’s agricultural community.
With a herd of approximately 40 cows, they not only milk their cattle, but also nurture the next generation by raising their replacements. They also tend to 150 acres, working 100 of those for cultivation, while the rest provides lush pastures for their livestock to graze.
A day in the life revolves around the well-being of their cows. Mornings begin with the rhythmic cadence of milking, followed by the nurturing of their livestock, and tending of their lands to provide feed and bedding for their cows.
In an ever-evolving industry, the Steckles remain adaptable. They note that while the basic tenets of dairy farming haven’t changed, consumer preferences have. Responding to the desire for milk with higher fat content, they’ve adjusted their feeding regimen accordingly. Automation has also revolutionized their operation, starting from big buckets and evolving into a pervasive, sophisticated system that tracks each cow’s milk production.
Rob also notes that while navigating evolving regulations and documentation adds an extra layer of work, their unwavering dedication to the welfare of their cows remains their guiding principle.
The Steckles’ success is inseparable from their community ties. They actively participate in the Huron County Dairy Producers Committee, contributing to seminars and discussions that foster knowledge exchange. Similarly, the Huron County Holstein Club provides a platform for learning about new protocols and industry advancements.
The Huron County Milk Producers demonstrate their commitment to their community by supporting the Huron County Food Distribution Centre, helping the less fortunate access essential perishable items. In challenging economic times, their donations have become a lifeline, illustrating the profound impact of community support.
Wirhaven Farm are not just dairy farmers; they are stewards of tradition, champions of progress, and generous contributors to their community.
