Halloween is a holiday that every child looks forward to, and making trick-or-treating a safe and enjoyable experience is everyone’s responsibility.
Provincial Constable Craig Soldan from the Huron OPP, shared some invaluable tips for pedestrian safety on Halloween night.
For parents, preparation is key. Choosing a costume that’s visible is a top priority. Try to make sure that your child is easily seen.
Additionally, consider giving your child a small LED flashlight to make them more visible to drivers.
If your child’s costume includes a mask, make sure they can see clearly to avoid walking into or in front of obstacles.
Teach your child basic traffic safety, and try to make sure that they don’t step out into traffic when they’re not expected.
When crossing the road, emphasize looking both ways and, ideally, crossing in groups with other kids or parents – making it harder for drivers to be surprised.
For children under the age of nine, it’s recommended that parents accompany them.
As they grow older and parents decide they’re ready to go out on their own, it’s essential to have a plan in place that you both agree on.
Having a plan and approximate location in case they’re not home by a certain time is crucial, as it helps law enforcement locate children efficiently in case of an emergency.
Remember, Halloween should be a night of fun and excitement, and by following these safety tips, we can ensure that our kids enjoy the holiday while staying out of harm’s way!
Tune in on Halloween night for myFM’s Halloween Safety Patrol! We will be out on the street making sure that everyone is keeping safe, and having fun.
