Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board is among many organizations that will be recognizing Wear Purple Day today (Friday, October 27).
The campaign is prompted by Ontario’s Children’s Aid Societies, and asks participants to demonstrate their commitment to helping children, youth, and families facing adversity.
Although historically, October was recognized as child abuse prevention month by the OCAS, this year in an attempt to help support marginalized communities as opposed to exacerbating their participation in the child welfare system, this year’s campaign focuses instead on providing the resources, support and access to services needed to ensure that all children are safe, and well cared for.
It’s not just about preventing abuse; it’s about creating a nurturing environment for the vulnerable.
Social media enthusiasts can participate by using the campaign’s profile picture filter and sharing content with the hashtag #IDressPurpleBecause. There’s also a call to action for Ontarians to create videos explaining why they’re wearing purple and how they contribute to supporting children, youth, and families.
For those seeking resources and support, a comprehensive list is available at oacas.org, addressing a wide range of challenges families may encounter, from food and housing insecurity to mental health, addictions, and intimate partner violence.
