A local 19-year-old is working to make her community a better place, and boost young people’s involvement.
Brianna Steckle received the award for youth excellence at the South Huron Chamber of Commerce Gala at the end of October – and she says that when she first starting stirring things up in South Huron, she wasn’t looking for any kind of recognition.
This past summer, she partnered with Vitalpoint Church to create a children’s booth at the Exeter Farmer’s Market, providing a safe and fun space for kids. The booth offered face painting, water games, cornhole, and a colouring station, fostering a sense of community at a young age – and giving parents the chance to connect with one another.
Another initiative she had a hand in was the “Move for Freedom Walk,” organized to raise awareness about human trafficking. The walk raised over $8,000, with 45 participants and 100 donors supporting the cause.
Being from nearby Zurich, Brianna faced the challenge of connecting with the Exeter community.
She says that if you’re looking to make a change in your community, the key is to stick with it, even when you’re not sure if it’s working.
Brianna also hinted at upcoming projects aimed at connecting young people in the community, acknowledging the challenges they face in building friendships and connections.
