In a meeting held last Monday, (November 6), Bluewater council discussed a proposal from the Bayfield People and Canine Community group (PACC) for the establishment of a new off-leash dog park in the area.
The proposed location for the dog park is at the Varna Stanley complex, specifically on the grassy area above the septic bed behind the complex.
The group intends to fully fund the dog park, relieving the municipality of any financial burden.
Council members discussed the potential challenges and considerations associated with the proposal. One of the primary concerns raised was regarding insurance and liability coverage. It was confirmed that the municipality’s insurance provider couldn’t extend liability coverage to the dog park. As a result, the PACC group would be required to provide its own insurance, which could be a challenging aspect to navigate.
The septic inspector also recommended against the proposed location, citing concerns about the septic system’s integrity if dogs took to digging in the area. However, it was suggested that further investigation could provide more information and guidance for council’s decision-making.
Despite the challenges, the PACC’s proposal has garnered support from various council members who believe in the need for an off-leash dog park in Bluewater.
The proposal includes a timeline that envisions the park opening in June 2024, subject to council approval and successful fundraising efforts by the PACC.
