The Huron County Accessibility Advisory Committee revealed winners for Barrier Free Design in both private and public sectors.
Additionally, they proudly declared the honoree of the prestigious 2023 Accessibility Champion award.
In Ontario, more than 24% of people aged 15 and older identify as having a disability.
Sandra Thompson Memorial Accessibility Champion Award
– Recipient: Carol Leeming
– Background: The award was established in 2022 by HCAAC in memory of Sandra Thompson, dedicated to promoting accessibility in Huron County.
– Sandra Thompson’s Legacy: Former Accessibility Coordinator for the County of Huron until 2016, inspiring others to improve accessibility.
Business Award of Merit for Barrier Free Design
– Winner: Riverview Local Eatery
– Owners: Curtis and Samantha Wells
– Renovations: Accessible door pads, patio for mobility device users, and an accessible bathroom with power door openers and closers.

Public Award of Merit for Accessibility Programming
– Winner: Municipality of Central Huron
– Recognition: Outstanding efforts in educating the public on Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and International Accessibility Regulatory Standards.
2023 Public Award of Merit for Barrier Free Design
– Winner: Township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh (ACW)
– Renovations: Thoughtful design of public entrance, staff entrance, public washroom, staff washroom, and reception area for an inclusive municipal services space.
