The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) and Maitland Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) are warning that shoreline bluffs are at a high risk of collapsing.
They are asking the public to be cautious around these areas due to ongoing erosion hazards.
The risk remains elevated because there could be a delay between erosion at the bluff’s bottom and a collapse.
High Lake Huron water levels in 1986 and near-record levels in 2020 led to extensive toe erosion, making some bluffs unstable.
The risk of collapse is still high as the slope adjusts to recent impacts, especially during autumn and winter thaws.
ABCA and MVCA advise avoiding bluff tops and beach areas where collapse risks are greater.
Unlike temporary advisories, continuous caution around bluff areas is crucial for safety.
ABCA has created a fact sheet to help shoreline residents recognize signs of erosion.
