At Bluewater council’s meeting on November 6th, the Bayfield People and Canine Community (PACC) presented a proposal for the establishment of a much-needed off-leash dog park in the area.
myFM sat down with Jeff Kish, the current President of Bayfield PACC, to talk about the community’s need for the park, and the challenges they face.
Kish cited recent census data from StatsCan.
The PACC conducted surveys, revealing that 68% of dog owners in Bayfield preferred having a dog park, and 85% endorsed and supported the idea.
It’s clear that the community wants a park available to them, but at this time, they’re provided with no viable options. Kish says that establishing a designated, fenced park, is the safest option for both the park’s users, and the public.
The municipality’s master recreation plan suggested the Varna Stanley complex, specifically converting the secondary ball diamond, as the ideal location due to its available space and proximity.
Addressing funding concerns, Kish highlighted the support of Bayfield residents for community initiatives not covered by municipal taxes.
The proposed timeline envisions opening the park in the summer of 2024, subject to council approval.
