It’s time for 12 days of Fire Safety, brought to you by the Lambton Shores Fire Department and South Huron Fire Department.
Did you know that lit cigarettes are Ontario’s number one cause of fatal fires?
Fire Prevention Officer Mike Herbert of the South Huron Fire Department, says that it’s important for smokers to move their habit outdoors – even in the chilly weather.
He advises using deep, sturdy ashtrays to prevent fire hazards.
Acknowledging the challenges that cold weather poses for smokers who prefer staying indoors, Herbert said that smoking indoors comes with inherent risks all year around, but especially in the winter.
Despite the overall decline in smoking rates, Herbert pointed out that smoking-related fires still pose a considerable risk.
Herbert said that a small action like flicking a lit cigarette butt can be the difference between a memorable holiday and a tragic one.
