Leney spoke passionately about their upcoming workforce initiatives
In a presentation to the Huron County Council on Wednesday morning, the Economic Development Department provided insight into their new Workforce Project.
Vicki Lass, Director of Economic Development for the County of Huron outlined the challenges faced by local workplaces in expanding their labor base. Key issues included difficulties in connecting employees with employers, leading to 28% of the eligible workforce commuting out of the county for work.

Lass provided some context for the department’s workforce retention project
Workforce Coordinator Clara Leney detailed the three-phase approach of the Workforce Project. Phase one involves promoting Ontario’s West Coast as a lifestyle, emphasizing living and working on the coast. This includes a targeted communications campaign, billboards, and a Huron-specific job board. Leney highlighted the importance of attracting residents who are currently living in Huron County, and leaving for work.

Ginn enquired about ecological impacts of reducing commuting.
The second and third phases focus on upskilling existing residents and attracting non-residents to work and live in the region. Leney emphasized collaboration with local immigration partnerships and retention efforts for young people.
During discussion, Mayor of Central Huron Jim Ginn pointed to the possible impact on climate change – with less people commuting out of the county for work, the move could contribute to reduced emissions.

Vanstone emphasized that every worker builds the community.
Deputy Mayor of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Bill Vanstone emphasized the need to simplify the process of bringing businesses to Huron County, including addressing shortages of industrial land – he also pointed to the importance of every job in building a thriving community.

Bazinet was passionate about youth retention following education in outside communities.
Mayor of Goderich, Trevor Bazinet, emphasized the critical nature of youth retention and suggested sharing success stories to inspire younger generations.
The next steps include the implementation of a comprehensive communications plan, including radio, print, and social media ads, with metrics and progress being tracked throughout the project. The council expressed overall support for the initiative, acknowledging the importance of addressing workforce challenges in the region.
