As 2023 draws to a close, myFM sat down with Mayor George Finch to reflect on the achievements and challenges faced by the Municipality of South Huron this past year.
When asked to list accomplishments in South Huron this past year, Mayor Finch insisted he could go on all day, but a few that he mentioned included the 70th anniversary of the South Huron Hospital’s service to the community, the Exeter 150 celebrations, and this past November, a collaboration between the municipality and the Legion brought banners to Exeter’s light poles honouring local veterans.
From a governmental perspective, Mayor Finch emphasized the success in planning and expanding housing – a commodity which is in short supply across the province.
He also recognized renovations to recreation and community amenities.
But the year wasn’t without it’s challenges – Mayor Finch underscored the importance of attracting young talent and addressing housing needs to help the community to continue to thrive in the coming years.
Looking ahead to 2024, Mayor Finch said that safety remains a paramount concern, with potential projects such as a crossover at the Parkette aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety. He also had his eye on various infrastructure improvements.
Looking ahead to the upcoming Rural Ontario Municipal Association conference, Mayor Finch says that they will continue to advocate for local needs on the provincial level.
