As we step into 2024, many of us are contemplating resolutions to enhance our lives. Surprisingly, your local library might be the key to fulfilling those resolutions without breaking the bank.
Jim Seale, the Programming and Community Engagement Coordinator for Cultural Services in the County of Huron, shared a few ways that the library can play a vital role in achieving your New Year’s resolutions.
If you’re looking to save some money, the library is a treasure trove of free entertainment.
Alongside physical media, they also have a plethora of e-resources, including e-books and movies, the library offers a cost-effective alternative to streaming services, and purchasing books for yourself. Even attending library programs rarely incurs fees, making it a budget-friendly source of entertainment.
Looking to make self care a priority this year? Seale says that they can help.
The library, with its quiet and welcoming atmosphere, serves as a neutral “third space” – beyond home and work – where people can unwind and escape daily stressors. They even offer self-help books focused on stress reduction.
For those resolving to read more, of course they have lots of books available. However, Jim advocates quality over quantity. With an extensive collection of physical and digital books, as well as audiobooks accessible from the comfort of your home, the library provides ample resources to nurture a reading habit.
If you’ve made a resolution to get more fit in 2024, look no further than the library’s object library.
This diverse array of resources encourages physical activity throughout the winter.
The library is also a hub for trying something new. From craft programs to book clubs, social groups, and language classes, there’s a plethora of opportunities to learn and connect with others.
And if 2024’s goal is getting more involved, volunteering is another resolution the library supports.
Jim invites community members to contribute their expertise and time to various programs inside the library, and outside of it.
As we navigate the possibilities of the new year, Seale makes it clear: your local library isn’t just a place for books; it’s a community hub, a source of enrichment, and a catalyst for positive change. Why not engage their expertise in making 2024, the best it could possibly be?
