This past year, economic conditions have led to unprecedented demand at our local food banks and aid agencies – with an increase of 62% at the Huron County Food Bank Distribution Centre.
That’s according to Executive Director Mary Ellen Zielman – she says that despite an increased demand for their services, this year marked a series of achievements for the Centre.
The Centre successfully initiated a small school program, re-establishing a presence in local schools to provide essential snacks.
The Centre’s strategic partnerships with local farmers and food producers played a pivotal role – increasing their ability to maintain a steady supply while managing their budget.
Reflecting on challenges, Zielman acknowledged the increasing reliance on food banks due to the rising cost of living.
Despite this, the community’s generosity sustained the demand and made sure that fewer people in our community went without food.
Looking ahead to 2024, Zielman outlined ambitious goals for the Centre – including expanding outreach programs, launching a boxed grocery initiative to allow for pop-up style access, and reaching more schools to provide snacks.
Despite the obstacles faced, Zielman remains optimistic – she says that the community’s inherent generosity continues to shine through.
