Huron OPP have issued a reminder about winter driving safety heading into an anticipated winter storm over the weekend.
Constable Craig Soldan, media relations officer with Huron OPP shared a couple tips to reduce your odds of being caught out in the snow unprepared this weekend.
It’s important that you make sure you have the best visibility possible, Constable Soldan emphasized the importance of cleaning off your entire vehicle.
He also pointed out that investing in winter tires increases handling, and makes vehicles easier to handle in difficult weather.
Heading into the first major snow event of the winter, Constable Soldan says that people need to remember that driving in the winter requires a different approach.
In the event that your vehicle leaves the road unplanned, Constable Soldan stressed the need for emergency kits.
Drawing attention to past situations where stranded individuals had to wait for assistance, he underlined the importance of having a plan and informing someone about your travel route in case of unforeseen delays.
He also says that in the event that you get stuck in the ditch, make sure to clear snow around your exhaust pipe so that carbon monoxide doesn’t come back into the vehicle.
For real-time updates on road conditions and closures, Constable Soldan recommended following @OPP_WR on X. The OPP media officers diligently share information on closures and provide timely updates.
In conclusion, Constable Soldan delivered a clear message: travel safe! They don’t want to see you at the scene of a collision.
