The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), has cleared three provincial police officers in a case where a suspect was punched during a standoff at a hospital’s emergency room.
The SIU found no grounds for criminal charges against the three Huron OPP officers involved in the arrest of a 41-year-old man on September 15, 2023.
The man, who had taken cocaine and behaved strangely, barricaded himself in a hospital washroom, leading to a shutdown of the emergency department.
Hospital staff called the police, suspecting property damage, and despite attempts to negotiate, the man remained uncooperative and climbed into the ceiling.

Damage to the ceiling is shown in this photo provided by OPP SIU report
The man was taken into custody under the Mental Health Act.
During the arrest, several punches were delivered to the man’s hands and arms as he fell to the floor, sustaining three fractured ribs.
